  1. Q. Who is qualified to import a vehicle under this scheme?

    A. Sri Lankan who have gone abroad and earn foreign exchange.


  2. Q. What type of vehicles can be imported under this scheme?

    A. Cars, Jeeps, Vans or Cabs not older than 10 years.


  3. Q. What are the other requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicant?

    A. If the relevant vehicle is under 5years; the vehicle should have been registered and used in the name of applicant at least for a period of one year.
    If the vehicle is within 5-10 years old, the vehicle should have been registered and used in the name of applicant at least for 3 years.


  4. Q. What is the benefit gain by importers under this scheme?

    A. You can buy a good condition used vehicle for a cheaper price and import same to your motherland when you're returning?


  5. Q. What are the vehicles cannot be imported under this scheme?

    A. (a) Vehicles are older than 10 years.
        (b) Left hand driven vehicles


  6. Q. Duration for which you become eligible to import a vehicle under this scheme?

    A. You are qualified to import a vehicle once in five years.


  7. Q. What are the documents should be submitted to import a vehicle under this scheme?

    A. Under mentioned documents should be submitted to Unit 02 in the department of Import & Export.

        a. Duly completed CIE 06 Form.

        b. Two photographs of the vehicle (Two Dimensions)

        c. Certificate of registration which proves that the vehicle is         registered in the Name of the applicant (Certificate of         Registration)

        d. Bank Statements to prove the applicant has earned foreign         exchange.

        e. Photocopies of the Visa pages, photograph page of the applicant         and the page having endorsement of leaving the country /         arrival to the country of the pass port.

        f. Vehicle inspector certificate.

* The license fee is charged as follows.

  1. Q. To whom a vehicle can be donated?

    A. By a person who is employed in a foreign country, to his/her mother /farther , brother / sister, wife / husband and children who are living in this country.


  2. Q. What type of a vehicle can be imported?

    A. Car, Jeep, Vans or Cabs which are not older than 5 years.

  3. Q. How it can be advantages for an importer under this scheme?

    A. Buying a used vehicle for a cheaper price to donate to a relation in Sri Lanka.


  4. Q. What are the vehicle that cannot be imported under this scheme?

    A. (a) The vehicle older than 5 years.
        (b) Left hand driven vehicles.


  5. Q. What is the derivation within which you became eligible to import a vehicle under the scheme?

    A. Once in 5 years.


  6. Q. What are the documents that should be submitted to obtain a license to import a vehicle under this scheme?

    A. The following documents should be submitted to the Unit No: 02 in the Department of Import & Export.

        a. Duly completed CIE 8a & CIE 8b forms.
            Donator CIE 8b
            Dontee CIE 8a

        b. Two photograph from two dimensions of the vehicles.

        c. Copy of vehicle registration certificate.

        d. A certificate of Donor’s foreign earnings and a bank statement         to prove the remittance of money to Sri Lanka.

        e. Photo copies of the visa page, page with the endorsement of         leaving the island and page with photo of passport holder of         donor’s passport to prove his stay abroad.

        f. Certificate of foreign employment.

        g. Relevant documents to prove the relationship with the donor         and donee.

        h. A condition certificate of the vehicle.

    * A license fee of 15% of CIF value of the vehicle should be paid to the Department.

  1. Q. What does it mean of vehicle modernization?

    A. Mounting a new body to your vehicle if your vehicle's body is decayed


  2. Q. What are the requirements for it?

    A. The following requirements should be fulfilled.

        a. The vehicle should be registered in your name.

        b. It should be possible to separate vehicle body from chassis.

        c. Vehicle body should be unserviceable.

        d. Vehicle chassis should be in a good condition.


  3. Q. What would you do, if the above requirements are fulfilled?

    A. The following requirements must be fulfilled

        a. Duly completed CIE - 1 form (Indent)

        b. Applicant should make a statement for the effect that the chassis         can be separated from the vehicle body and vehicle         body/chassis is not in a serviceable condition.

        c. The applicant should indicate in his letter that the place where         vehicle can be examined and his contact No. (Telephone)

        d. Five (5) photos of the vehicle must be handed over. (Four (4)         sides of the vehicle & Arial view)

        e. A copy of the certificate of registration of the vehicle issued by         Registrar of Motor Vehicles with the original.

        f. A proforma invoice from a foreign supplier a suitable body         shell for your vehicle. A copy of payment receipt by which         relevant service charge is paid.


  4. Q. How do we decide as to whether a body shell is needed to be fitted to your vehicle?

    A. An inspection board appointed by the department, decides after examine the vehicle.


  5. Q. If the vehicle chassis is decayed while the vehicle is in a good condition?

    A. For the above procedure must be applied for this same procedure as above is relevant.
